I want a brimmed hat with a finished length of 12″ and a circumference of 20″. To find your perfect size, use a tape measure to measure the widest part of your head. This will give you your head circumference measurement. Draw tail through last loop and weave through remaining 8 sts, drawing tightly to close. If you’d like to substitute, any bulky yarn that gets gauge will work – I’ve found that a great substitute is Lion Brand Color Made Easy. If you prefer sewing, you can do that instead! Fasten off and leave a really long loose end to sew it up as well as close the top of the beanie. Fold the piece in half, sl st the ends together along the first and last row. (Top Down Pattern) – If you’re working a top down pattern (like the pattern below). If you are a more experienced crocheter, this is a pattern you could easily make in a day (maybe while binge watching!). Any numbers after a colon at the end of an instruction are stitch counts.

Hi Megan,From your comment, it sounds like you are sewing two layers of fabric together with the running stitch - is that right? If so, I think that's where things are going wrong. Then, when you pull on the ends of the yarn, the top of the beanie should cinch closed like a drawstring. To make my beanie, I crocheted as many rows as it took to reach a finished hat size of 20″, which turned out to be 36 rows plus 1 seaming row.

This weaves the tail end through the stitches to ensure the top of the beanie cinches tightly. Pull the tail as tight as you can to cinch the top together (not so tight that you break your yarn, though). For this free crochet beanie pattern, I used We Crochet’s Twill in the colorway Crabapple. I am fortunate to have been gifted this yarn from We Crochet specifically for this pattern. Tackle the chilly weather head-on with the easy breezy chunky beanie for adults.
Step 2: Head Measurement
Gauge is simply the tension used to make the hat. Your tension and my tension aren’t the same. Check your tension as you’re crocheting and use a different size hook, if necessary, to better match the finished measurements.
I'm just having some trouble with closing the top of my beanie. If you love to crochet as much as I do, I think you’ll love these other free crochet patterns. Then, subtract about 3″ from this to get the finished hat size measurement. Since this stitch pattern is so stretchy, I find that 3″ of negative ease gives me a nice snug fit.
Repeat rows 2-3 around edge of hat, working in back loops only to create ribbing, until you have reached row 1. Use a slip st to attach last row to row 1. Add more rounds of single crochet stitches to make slouchy hats.
